Q: With the market for Internet of Things products poised to reach nearly 21 billion connected
devices by 2020, how do we ensure our wireless communication is safe and secure?
Kin-Yip Liu, Sr. Director, Systems Engineering &
Segment Marketing, Cavium, Inc.
Given recent examples of DNS attacks launched via connected devices and the
potential for Io T hacks to manipulate business
intelligence for financial gain and even jeopardize
public safety, the topic of properly securing the Io T is one
of paramount importance for the service provider and OEM
communities and government agencies.
Io T devices may be connected using a variety of wireless
or wired protocols. Typically, an Io T gateway connects a
number of IoT devices, aggregates sensor data, performs
communications protocol translation as needed, processes
sensor data before sending it onward, etc. Compute servers,
residing locally (in the fog) or in the cloud, then communicate
with Io T gateways to provide various services leveraging
intelligence collected by Io T devices or utilizing Io T devices
for performing relevant tasks. In the case of wirelessly
connected Io T devices using NB (narrow band) IoT LTE or
similar protocols, virtualized mobile infrastructure at the
edge/cloud connect the IoT devices with compute servers. In
all cases, Io T security needs to be implemented end-to-end
across the entire Io T system.
Communications between the things, Io T gateways, and
cloud services must be cryptographically secured to preserve
confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity. Only the intended
and authorized recipient of data can access or modify data and
messages. Secure session setup with security key exchanges and
device authentication, as well as encryption and decryption of
data with excellent power efficiency are essential. Moreover,
secure and effective key management and provisioning is a
critical part of the overall Io T and security system.
Detecting and protecting against malicious attacks and
unauthorized data access and manipulation are a major part of
Io T security as well. For example, for wirelessly connected Io T
devices, mobile edge servers can perform intrusion prevention,
deep packet inspection, and URL filtering services right at the
mobile edge and avoid propagation of security issues.
